Toilet Paper Supplier: How to Verify Barcode Print Quality?

Table of Contents

B2B procurement · Specification review

A toilet paper supplier should verify two things separately: that the approved GTIN and human-readable data belong to the exact retail pack, and that the barcode printed on the final wrapper meets the buyer's scanning specification. Check an approved artwork proof, then inspect wrapped production samples under the scanner environment in which they will be used. GS1 guidance covers symbol size, quiet zones, contrast and placement; the buyer must still approve its own SKU data and release plan.

This is a packaging-data and printed-symbol approval workflow. No sample image, scanner beep or article text certifies that a particular Sansheng retail pack passed verification.

What should the buyer approve first?

A toilet paper supplier should verify two things separately: that the approved GTIN and human-readable data belong to the exact retail pack, and that the barcode printed on the final wrapper meets the buyer's scanning specification. Check an approved artwork proof, then inspect wrapped production samples under the scanner environment in which they will be used. GS1 guidance covers symbol size, quiet zones, contrast and placement; the buyer must still approve its own SKU data and release plan.

Toilet Paper Supplier: Lock the identity before print

A toilet paper supplier may print a technically crisp symbol that encodes the wrong item. Start by mapping each sellable pack size, ply or count variant to the buyer-approved item master and GTIN. Record the intended barcode type, the human-readable digits and the destination scanning point. A different pack count may be a different trade item even if the wrapper design looks almost identical; the brand owner must confirm its allocation rules with its GS1 organization.

The supplier should receive a controlled artwork file with a revision number, not a screenshot of a barcode copied from an email. Ask the toilet paper supplier to return a proof that identifies which SKU, pack count and wrapper material it represents. Keep the artwork approval separate from the paper-roll specification. A tissue-quality trial does not validate packaging data.

Verify the printed pack, not only the file

GS1 identifies quiet zones, contrast, size, colour, symbol construction and placement as common print-quality checks. Plastic wrap can wrinkle or reflect at the symbol; a seam, fold or printed border can interfere with scanning after the pack is sealed. The toilet paper supplier should submit finished wrapped samples from the actual print and packing route, including the areas where film tension or curvature changes the symbol shape.

Agree who performs formal barcode verification, which GS1 and ISO/IEC specification applies to the selected symbol, and what grade or result the receiving retailer requires. A handheld phone scan is useful for catching a gross error, but it is not a substitute for a controlled verification report. Record the verifier, aperture or setup as required by the applicable method, symbol result, sample identity and artwork revision.

Test the route to shelf

Inspect packs from multiple cartons and points in the run, not just a pre-production proof. Ask the toilet paper supplier to check symbols after shrink or stretch wrapping, packing and representative transit handling. A wrapper that scans flat on a desk may wrinkle when rolls are compressed in a retail multipack. Record damaged, smeared or hidden codes and distinguish them from incorrect encoded data.

If the buyer uses different checkout or warehouse environments, name each one. GS1 notes that barcode type, size and placement depend on where the symbol is scanned. A retail point-of-sale symbol and a logistics label serve different units and should not be treated as interchangeable. The person responsible for the item master must approve any change to pack count or GTIN before the artwork is reused.

Make the release gate auditable

The toilet paper supplier should link each delivered pack revision to an approved proof, printed sample, verification record and buyer sign-off. Put the barcode check on the packaging release checklist rather than hoping it is covered by general final inspection. If a printer, film, ink, pack geometry or symbol location changes, repeat the relevant checks and retain the former approved sample for comparison.

The financial risk is not limited to paper quality: a non-scanning or wrong-code pack may be rejected at distribution even if the rolls are otherwise sound. Do not claim a specific chargeback amount without the retailer contract. Instead, ask the buyer to state the required scan environment and acceptance evidence in the RFQ. This makes a same-spec quote possible and keeps responsibility for code ownership clear.

What belongs in the RFQ?

  • Provide the approved GTIN, symbol type and item-master owner.
  • Supply controlled artwork and the final wrapper construction.
  • Name scan environment, verification method and required report.
  • Require reapproval after print, film, pack or SKU changes.

Questions buyers also ask

Does a barcode that scans on a phone pass retailer requirements?

Not necessarily. Use the retailer's required verification method and finished-pack samples.

Who owns the GTIN decision?

The brand or designated item-master owner should approve allocation and any SKU change; the supplier should print the controlled data.

Can one retail symbol identify a shipping pallet?

Retail items and logistics units have different identification purposes. Specify the required label for each unit.
