A sound exam couch roll has wound layers that remain compatible with its wrapper, carton and dispenser. Telescoping describes axial displacement of layers so the end face is no longer reasonably flush. The exam couch roll manufacturer should provide the approved width, core inner diameter, outer diameter, winding direction, perforation and pack arrangement. These details determine whether a protruding layer is merely visible or interferes with the holder.

Do not confuse an off-center cardboard core, a crushed roll edge or loose end glue with telescoping. Photograph both faces and the side view before opening the wrapper, then repeat after unpacking. Ask the exam couch roll manufacturer to identify which condition the buyer actually complained about. One generic photograph of a bent roll will not support a repeatable acceptance rule.

Sample after packing and transit handling

Take rolls from top, middle and lower carton positions and keep carton identity. Measure the maximum axial layer projection against a flat reference plane without pushing the layers back into place. Note whether the wrapper conceals or restrains the movement. Record packing orientation, carton fill, compression and any visible core movement. Run the intended holder trial

A small visual projection can be commercially important if clearance is tight; a larger projection might be harmless on another holder.

The holder trial helps expose the symptom, but the inspection record must still identify the failure mode. Do not state that a laboratory thickness result proves the roll will unwind correctly.

Agree release and requalification

Ask the exam couch roll manufacturer to retain photographs, projection measurements, carton positions and holder observations with each sampled lot. Define which condition triggers hold, concession or rejection. The limit should include both visual extent and a use outcome if the customer depends on dispenser clearance. The supplier should not rework a shifted roll by hand and then present it as an untouched production sample.

Require notice of changes to winding setup, core, wrapper, carton count or pallet orientation. A previously approved roll may behave differently after any of those changes. The RFQ should include the actual holder model and a physical reference roll; otherwise competing offers might quote the same nominal dimensions while delivering different winding stability.
